Witold Lutoslawski was a highly influential modern composer. He explored his own unique style while drawing on the strengths of others in the twentieth-century music scene, which was characterised by "controlled accidentals","interval levels and interval patterns"and other highly individual compositional techniques."The compositional techniques that he developed, such as ’controlled chance’ and ’interval level and interval level patterns’,were highly individual and led to a world-renowned achievement in music composition. In Lutoslawski’s late work Partita, the first integration of his personal technical theory is presented in a refined and expressive work. This thesis will examine the intervals and interval-level patterns, the way in which the twelve-tone pitch is organised, harmonic progressions, the structure of the piece, and controlled accidental techniques in Partita, providing insight into Lutoslavsky’s unique musical language and thus giving the author a more comprehensive understanding of the composer. It is hoped that the exploration of this work will provide scholars with some reference value and that some useful insights and experiences can be gained from it.
