Neill Blomkamp is a South African-American filmmaker whose distinctive science fiction films have garnered widespread acclaim.In his films,Neill Blomkamp keeps innovating in form and technique while integrating his life experiences and perspectives.As a typical contemporary cultural representation,“body” significantly impacts the narrative features and thematic expressions in Neill Blomkamp’s science fiction film,where body images and consciousness are prioritized.Therefore,this thesis aims to explore the narrative features in Neill Blomkamp’s films from the perspective of body narratives,revealing the role of the “body” in promoting narrative development and expressing meanings in films as well as discussing the innovation and significance of Neill Blomkamp reflecting in his films.The main content of this thesis consists of three sections.The first section gives a brief introduction to Neill Blomkamp and his movies.The relevant concepts of body narratives and the presentation of body narratives in Neill Blomkamp’s movies are laid out in this section as well.The second section analyzes his movies from three aspects: body images and construction,the logic of body narratives,and the audio-visual presentation of the body.Constructing body images of heterogeneous living creatures is the central task of characterization in his films,and constructed bodies and their images,as important carriers and clues of narrative,are crucial to comprehending the principles of filmmaking.The “body” gives impetus to the narrative of his films and the spatiotemporal environment constructed in the films also plays an important role in the cinematic image body’s formation,existence,and meanings.The display of the “real and wonderful experience” of the cinematic image body and the prominence of sound and movement of it jointly complete the audio-visual construction of the body on the screen.Meanwhile,the “real and wonderful experience” created by the body functions as inducing the psychological touch of the audience and promoting the creation of physical meaning as well as movie experiences.The third section illustrates the reflection of body metaphors behind science fiction by analyzing the “body” as a metaphorical expression in Neill Blomkamp’s science fiction films and revealing the practical significance of his films at the humanistic and social critical levels.The “body” is a carrier of the film content as well as the content itself.It plays a crucial role in image creation,narrative development,spectacular construction,and realistic metaphorization.Involving Neill Blomkamp’s ten science fiction films,This thesis explores the narrative techniques of the “body” in them and reveals the metaphorical connotations behind the “body” in demonstration that body narratives in Neill Blomkamp’s films present his attention to body,his contemplation in reality,and his exploration of science fiction film creation.
