Study On The Characters Of Place Names In Foshan

Foshan is located in the central part of Guangdong Province and the hinterland of the Pearl River Delta.It belongs to the Cantonese dialect distribution area.Some place names have a strong dialect color,reflecting the cultural connotation and regional characteristics of the Cantonese people in the place names.At the same time,it used to be the residence of the Baiyue people.Although most of the aborigines have been sinicized or moved to other places,some ancient Vietnamese place names have been preserved.Place names are recorded in words,and words carry the history of place names.The research on the use of characters in Foshan is to provide materials for the study of geography and history in Foshan,and to contribute to the study of place names.On the basis of collecting and arranging the data of place names,this paper makes statistics and analysis of the names of Foshan in order to achieve the definition of the pronunciation of the characters.The full text consists of six parts.The introduction part briefly introduces the historical and geographical situation of Foshan City,the research status of toponymy in my country and the research status of Foshan names.From the perspective of linguistics,the research on place names is classified and summarized,so as to prepare for the research on the use of names in Foshan.The first chapter gives an overview of the usage of names in Foshan.Sort out the characters of place names,determine 1,414 place-name characters from 8,232 standard place-names,and use the statistical method to comprehensively count and sort the frequency of the use of names in Foshan,and analyze the“Da”character with the highest word frequency.It has two meanings,one is that it means huge and open,and the other is an ancient Vietnamese element,which means land.At the same time,the glyphs,phonetics and grammar of place names have distinct regional characteristics,which can reflect certain regional characteristics.Using the method of textual research,combined with relevant knowledge such as linguistics and cultural studies,from the use of place names,it not only reflects the natural geographical features of Foshan,such as the terrain of Foshan is high in the west and low in the east,and the river network is dense,but also contains the unique water culture,business culture,clan culture,religious belief culture,totem culture.The second chapter investigates the common characters used in the names of Foshan.To sort out the common names,188 common names were determined from the 553 place name suffixes,and the frequency of use of the common names was counted by using the statistical method.At the same time,the 188 common names are divided into two categories: physical geographic entities and human geographic entities.On the basis of word frequency statistics,some representative common names are selected for investigation one by one.Among them,the words used for physical geographic entities include “Gang”,“Tang”,“Chong”,“Sha”,“Zhou”,“Wan” etc,and the human geographic entities include“Jia”,“Bian”,“Xu”,“Shi”,“Bu”,“Wei”etc,so as to better explore the topographic features and regional cultural characteristics of Foshan.The third chapter investigates the special characters in the name of Foshan.Based on the“General Standardized Chinese Character Table”,11 special characters were determined from1415 characters used in place names,and they were divided into two categories: uncommon characters and non-common Chinese characters,such as “Ma”,“Na”,“Jiao”,“Shen”,“Jing”,“Hui”,“Lei”etc.Use toponymy,philology,exegesis and other related knowledge to determine its pronunciation and explain its meaning,in order to provide a reference for the standardization and standardization of place names.The fourth chapter investigates the ancient Vietnamese place names in the names of Foshan.Determine the criteria for judging ancient Vietnamese place names.On this basis,combined with the academic achievements of predecessors,Zhuang-Dong language and related language materials,the ancient Vietnamese place names left in Foshan area are used the characters “Dong”,“Lang”,“Lang”,“Liu”,“Lu” were investigated one by one to explore their etymology and explain their meanings.In the concluding remarks,the article summarizes the general characteristics and irregularities of Foshan name use,and reflects on the deficiencies of this article,hoping to improve it in the future.
