A Practical Report On The Translation Of Excerpt From Popular Music Entries In The New Grove Dictionary Of Music And Musicians

From November 2020 to March 2022,the author translated 6 pop music entries excerpted from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians from English to Chinese,with a total word count of 64,124 in the English original text and 129,312 in the Chinese translation.This report will report this translation practice in detail,summarize various problems encountered in translation,explore the specific reasons for these problems,and show the solutions to the problems.This report consists of four chapters.The first chapter is the introduction of the task background which briefly introduces the background of the translation practice,the task content and the task process.Among them,the task process includes pre-translation preparation,while-translation activities and post-translation review.The second chapter is the analysis framework.Since most of the translation practice reports in the past were written by using a certain translation theory(such as Skopos Theory)combined with the case study of "Word,Sentence and Discourse",which made a disconnection between translation theory and translation practice and led to the little theoretical and practical value of the translation practice reports.Therefore,the author decided to find another way.Through these years of study,the author found that the framework of"Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation" proposed by Professor Li Changshuan corresponds to the three standards of translation,"Faithfulness,Expressiveness and Elegance",which can flexibly and effectively analyze various problems encountered in translation and find corresponding solutions,so that translators do not need to stick to a certain translation theory,but choose the corresponding translation theory and strategy according to the actual situation of translation practice.Therefore,this report adopts the framework proposed by Li Changshuan,emphasizing the importance of critical thinking and research and study ability,and attaching relevant discussions of other translation scholars.The third chapter is the case analysis,which analyzes the problems in translation from the three aspects of comprehension,expression and adaptation,and proposes solutions.The fourth chapter is the conclusion,which summarizes the translation practice and discusses the abilities that translators of pop music texts should possess.Through case analysis,this report finds that in the translation of popular music texts,it is necessary to accurately comprehend popular music terminology,accurately comprehend the context,and increase popular music professional expertise at the level of comprehension;at the level of expression,it is necessary to avoid westernized Chinese,make the language coherent,make the language well-proportioned,and handle pop music proper nouns;at the level of adaptation,it is possible to amplify,omit,use four-character structure cleverly,and change the form of the original text.Using the specific method of translation above,the author shows an improved version of the corresponding translation.
