Implicit Information Translation Under Cohesion Theory

This paper is a translation practice based on the psychology text Bad News:Why We Fall for Fake News and Alternative Facts.This text combines a large number of psychological experiments,news reports,news development history and other contents to analyze the causes of people’s susceptibility to false news and bad news.It is logically ordered and contains a lot of implicit information.Since the implicit information in psychology text affects the semantic understanding and discourse coherence of the target text,it is difficult for the author to accurately and clearly deal with the implicit information expressed in the source text.In addition,the author finds that the meaning of implicit information is closely related to a large number of cohesive devices in the source text.Cohesive device is a way to achieve discourse cohesion and plays a helpful role in translating implicit information.The author divides the implicit information in the source text into implicit semantic information,implicit reference information and implicit logic information,analyzes the characteristics of the cohesive methods in the source text under cohesion theory,as well as the logic and semantics of the source text,then adopts different translation techniques and methods for the implicit information.To be specific,the author analyzes the context semantics through reference in cohesion theory,figures out the referent content,and supplements the reference information with the translation methods of repetition and amplification,so as to realize the manifestation of implicit reference information.In the source text,there are two kinds of cohesive devices in logic,one has connective cohesion,but the logic is inconsistent with the connective meaning while there is the absence of connectives in the other kind.The author needs to fully understand the general idea of the text,identifies the implicit logic information,and manifest the implicit logic by adding or replacing the connectives.Lexical cohesion inspires the author to determine meaning and manifest implicit information at lexical level.By analyzing the cohesive relationship between words or phases,the author can deduce the implicit meaning of them in the text,manifest the implicit meaning of words in the reiteration cohesion by specification and amplification,and that in the collocation cohesion by extension and paraphrase,which not only maintains the cohesive relationship between words,but also makes the translation smooth and readable.This translation practice report focus on the translation of implicit information in the source text from the perspective of cohesion.The author hopes that the translation techniques summarized in this practice can provide a reference for the translation of similar texts.
