A Report On The Translation Of Social Information News On Huanqiu Website

As China continuously promotes its level of opening up,the two-way cultural exchange with foreign countries has become an irresistible trend.Such being the case,a series of websites,such as Huanqiu,have been set up to meet the netizens' demand of hunting for the anecdotes all over the world.This translation practice comprises English-to-Chinese news I have trans-edited in the Social Information Channel of the platform from October 2016 to July 2017,amounting to 20,000 words.The news of this channel almost fall into the category of soft news with a light theme and an integration of enlightenment and entertainment.After reviewing the relevant literature,I have decided to take Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory as the guiding principle for this project.This paper will also offer some cases to illustrate the application of Communicative Translation Theory in trans-editing social information news.In this translation project,I have realized that the trans-edition of social information news should meet the following three principles,namely “faithfulness”,“smoothness” and “elegance”.“Faithfulness” refers to the authenticity and accuracy of the target text.“Smoothness” means to make the translation version conform to the mode of target language.“Elegance” means that the target text needs to boast the rhythm and formal beauty of Chinese,thus making it understandable and endowed with a sense of aesthetic value.When trans-editing these news articles,I have adjusted the language order of the source text by restructuring the paragraphs and adding or deducting parts in the sentences in order to meet the above three principles.This report consists of four chapters.The first chapter introduces the background and meaning of the translation task and briefly describes the characteristics of soft news.The second chapter describes the translation process,including preparation,translating and proofreading.The third chapter mainly analyzes the application of Communicative Translation Theory in news translation,and uses typical cases to illustrate the news trans-edition from three aspects,including news title,lead and body.Especially in the body part,I summarized the translation skills from three perspectives,namely the vocabulary,grammar,and discourse.The last chapter summarizes the gains and insufficiency of this translation project,and provides reference for similar types of translation.
