A Report On The E-C Translation Of Economic News Based On Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory

Globalization has witnessed more frequent economic exchanges all over the world.In 2023,the uncertainty and complexity of the world economy triggered by the COVIE-19 pandemic and global inflation have increased.Therefore,it is essential for people who engaged in the economic industry to steer the global economy in the right direction.Meanwhile,the booming development of new media enables Chinese audiences.However,the differences between the English and Chinese languages and the text features of economic news made the quality of some translation uneven with unsmooth expression and mistranslation,which greatly affect the accuracy and effectiveness of information communication.This report is written based on the author’s translation project at China Daily with the analysis materials mainly selected from the economic news of mass media such as The Economist,The Guardian,and BBC News.Through analysis,the author finds that economic news,as a kind of informational text,focuses on the delivery of information.The language of economic news is objective in expression,refined in vocabulary,abundant in technical terminology,and has frequent use in data and comparison.Therefore,this report conducts the case analysis from the four categories of shifts,namely level shifts,class shifts,structure shifts,and unit shifts based on Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory,illustrating how the author realizes the shifts in the translation process to enhance the accuracy and readability of the translation.Based on the analysis,the author concludes that the flexible shifts at lexical,syntactic,and grammatical levels make the translation smooth and consistent with the idiomatic expression of Chinese as well to convey information to domestic audience more precisely.This report demonstrates and proves the guiding significance and the feasibility of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory to the English-to-Chinese translation of economic news.It is also expected to provide theoretical references as well as practical experience for both translators and MTI students,in order to improve the quality of English to Chinese translation of economic news.
