A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Conditional Clauses In Guidelines For Establishing A Poison Center

This translation practice report,based on A comprehensive Grammar of the English Language,makes an in-depth study on the Chinese translation of conditional clauses in Guidelines for Establishing a Poison Center.The guide mainly introduces the background of establishing the poison center,the practical factors that should be considered in the initial stage of establishment,the services that the poison center can provide,and how poison center prevents and deals with chemical accidents.By reading the text,the translator finds that conditional clauses appear frequently in this guide texts,which are mainly used to explain the handling of accidents in different situations.In order to improve the quality of translation,based on Skopos theory,the translator adopts translation methods such as linear translation,adverse translation,inversion and conversion to study the most representative examples in case analysis.The translator has found that: 1)Direct conditional clauses guided by if are generally translated into conditional relation.2)Based on the coherence principle of Skopos theory,the omitted conditional clauses guided by if can be translated into attributives by transformation.3)Conditional clauses guided by providing,provided,once,when and where are different in translation.These conditional clauses can be translated by many translation methods,such as transformation,amplification and so on.4)In addition,some prepositional phrases with the meaning of “condition” can also be translated into Chinese conditional clauses.5)The position of conditional clauses within a complex sentence,will affect the translation.According to the information theory,when the conditional clause precedes the main clause,it carries less information,linear translation can be used to translate the clause.When conditional clause follows the main clause,it carries large amount of information.Adverse translation and inversion can be used to translate the sentence.Through this translation practice,the translator enriches the translation methods and strategies of conditional clauses,and conveys the relevant health information to the readers to a certain extent.The translator hopes that the translation can provide reference and guiding significance for future studies to do such translation practice and translation teaching,and improve the quality of Chinese translation of guide texts.
