A Report On The Translation Of Chinese Medical Texts From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

With the accelerating process of economic globalization,international academic and medical exchanges are becoming more and more frequent.Translation plays an essential role in crosslanguage communication.Skopos theory is a representative theory of the German functional school,which plays a significant role in the development of translation theory and practice.This theory mainly includes three rules:the Skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.This thesis takes the English translation of the International Eye Science as the research object.Guided by the three rules of Skopos theory and combined with the language characteristics of medical texts,this thesis analyzes and discusses the guiding significance of the rules of Skopos,coherence and fidelity in the translation of medical texts at the lexical,syntactic and discourse level respectively,so as to improve the quality of English translation of medical texts in China.This translation report first introduces the background,purpose and significance of the translation task.Secondly,it introduces the translation process,including the analysis of the features of the original text,preparation before translation task,translation process and post-translation.Thirdly,it illustrates the translation theories adopted in this translation practice report,mainly including the overview of Skopos theory,the rules of Skopos theory and the application of Skopos theory into translation.Finally,it focuses on this translation practice report,makes a detailed analysis of the representative translation cases of Chinese medical texts based on the Skopos theory.At the lexical level,this thesis discusses the translation of medical terms,abbreviations and notional verbs,usually adopting the literal translation.At the syntactic level,this thesis discusses the translation methods of active sentences,non-subject sentences and long and complex sentences,such as amplified translation,linear translation and inverted translation.At the discourse level,this thesis explores the logical coherence and grammatical cohesion under the Skopos theory,often using linear translation.In addition,proper translation methods can make the translation clearer and coherent and improve the translation quality.This translation practice report can also provide certain experiences and references for the translation of medical texts and achieve the purpose of improving the quality of English translation of Chinese medical texts.
