Under the guidance of the UMEER practical framework proposed by Li Changshuan, the interpreter/author seeks to provide strategies to better interpret long and difficult sentences. The problems found in and interpreting strategies suggested for the interpreting of long and difficult sentences are as follows:In the comprehension of long and difficult sentences, the main problem is that the interpreter does not have enough background knowledge on the maritime industry and thus cannot grasp the key information effectively. To this end,the interpreter should make adequate preparations before interpreting and adjust the cognitive resources in time.In addition, when memorizing information of long and difficult sentences, the interpreter cannot distribute effort in a reasonable way and remember all technical terms. For this reason, the interpreter can take notes when the memory is overloaded;on the basis of clarifying the main points, the interpreter can chunk the information. When the interpreter re-expresses information of long and difficult sentences, the semantic groups are fragmented and lack proper connection. The interpreter can adopt the skills of part-of-speech conversion, repetition, addition, omission and so on according to the principle of syntactic linearity. In the face of emergencies when interpreting long and difficult sentences, the interpreter cannot adapt to the accent quickly, causing omissions and pauses. The interpreter needs to strengthen listening training, make reasonable use of reference materials, find logical relations of sentences and make informed guesses.
