A Report On E-C Translation Of Evaluating The Evaluator:a Novel Perspective On Translation Quality Assessment

With the constant academic exchange between China and foreign countries,more and more foreign academic works have been introduced to China in virtue of translation.However,compared with the large number of translated works in other fields of humanities and social sciences and natural sciences,the translation of academic works on translation studies has not received much attention from the domestic translation field for a long time.Therefore,an academic book in this discipline is translated for the purpose of introducing foreign academic theoretical achievements and promoting the systematic development of domestic translation studies.The translation task is the English academic work “Evaluating the Evaluator: a Novel Perspective on Translation Quality Assessment”.Published in 2020,it is one of the series of Routledge Advances in Translation and Interpreting Studies.This book proposes a new argument-based TQA theory by combining theoretical construction with empirical studies,which is of high theoretical and practical significance.Based on the translation task,the author explores translation methods of academic works in the light of the relevance theory.First,an analysis of the text features of the original book and the resulting translation problems is given.Then,targeted translation methods are explored by analyzing the similarities and differences in cognitive habits between Chinese and English to achieve optimal relevance at the lexical,syntactical,and textual levels of the target text.At the lexical level,some terms are rendered as their standardized translated names,while others are mainly translated literally.Besides,nominalized structures are adjusted by adding category words or converting nouns into verbs.At the syntactical level,passive sentences can be rendered into Chinese passive sentences if the passive relationship should be preserved;if not,they can be translated into Chinese active sentences,judgement sentences,or subject-less sentences.In terms of long sentences,synchronizing,reversing,and integration are proposed based on the logical order of translation.Meanwhile,methods such as division,addition,or omission should be properly used.At the textual level,the original cohesive devices are handled by clarifying or omitting reference words,omitting conjunctions,or retaining lexical reiteration.Moreover,discourse coherence is achieved via the use of the aforementioned translation methods.Those translation methods presented in this report have reference significance for academic translation and pertinent studies.
