Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),as a unique cultural heritage of China, enjoys more and more popularity overseas through cultural exchange. However,as indicated by the CNKI,much of the translation and research of the TCM discourse so far has primarily focused on the TCM classics, and there is only one translation of popular science books of TCM.In comparison to the former, the latter is less difficult and more interesting for general foreign readers to learn basic TCM knowledge. It facilitates the spread of Chinese medicine culture. The translator hereby selected the TCM science monograph: Simple Skin Care,Elaborate Body Care(hereinafter referred to as SSC,EBC)published by Tong Tong in 2011 as the source discourse for this translation practice. It can enrich the content of TCM translation and be used for future references. In light of the eco-translatology theory, the translator analyzed the prominent features of the source discourse from multiple dimensions — language, culture, communication—and summarized corresponding translation methods: 1)In linguistic dimension, the number of the active voice as well as the Chinese flowing sentences is high.To conform to the expression conventions of target language, the translator proposed the three adaptive selection strategies—shift of voices, division translation and combination translation;2)in cultural dimension, there are many culturally-loaded words, mostly are TCM terms and herbal cuisine names. To successfully convey their cultural connotations, the translator suggested literal translation and transliteration with annotation as the primary methods, and free translation as the auxiliary method;3)in communicative dimension, the translation quality of ancient Chinese medical discourses and recipes influences the target readers’ understanding about the source discourse. To achieve the original communicative purposes as much as possible, the translator adopted the two adaptive selection strategies—explanatory translation and explicit translation. This translation practice proved that the eco-translatology theory can provide effective guidance for the translation of popular science books of TCM.However, because of translator’s limited experience in TCM translation, there were inescapably some deficiencies in the translation. Moreover, this report was written based on the translation of excerpts from the SSC,EBC,it was not enough to generalize all the features of translation of popular science books of TCM.
