| Nanning is an important gateway city of the Belt and Road Initiatives and the permanent venue to hold the ASEAN Expo.A series of international forums and conferences are held in Nanning every year.In the 2020 China-ASEAN Advanced Technology Matchmakings,the author participated in the translation of the China-ASEAN Advanced Technology Matchmakings Project List.This manual is helpful for participants to overcome language barriers,enhance mutual understanding and find potential partners.It is of special significance for the smooth holding of the conference,project signing and achievement transformation.Combined with the adaptation theory,this report mainly analyzes the key points and difficulties encountered in translation practice from the lexical and syntactic levels,and then summarizes the specific translation strategies.The translation emphases and difficulties of the source text include:(1)When translating proper names,names of Chinese patent medicine in the source text are vague,ambiguous and general.As for trademark of technological companies,it’s difficult to balance between its pronunciation and meaning.There are some repeated expressions of the same information and implicit logic in the four-character words;Most of the sci-tech neologisms are generated by word formation methods such as compound method;(2)The run-on sentences in the source text shows many semantic levels or weak logical cohesion;As for no-subject sentences,their subject is so secretive that it can’t be explicitly embodied in the target text;The parallel sentences are common in the source text,and the use of the parallel structure is adopted to highlight some concepts or enhances the sense of rhythm.These key points and difficulties have brought great challenges to translation practice.Through the translation practice and analysis of these key and difficult points,this report aims to summarize the common translation strategies and skills of C-E translation of scientific and technological information texts,in order to provide reference for similar translation practices in the future.It is found that:(1)The translation of proper names mainly adopts transliteration plus literal translation to make up for the shortcomings of pure transliteration;For the four-character words with repeated expressions of the same information,the omission is adopted to avoid falling into the confusion of choosing synonyms;Preposition-using methods can make the implicit logic explicit in four-character words in line with English habits;The literal translation is adopted to translate the sci-tech neologisms generated by the compound method so that the translation can be accepted by the target language group faster,while the homophonic free translation is used to make the neologisms formed by the direct generation method more stand the test of time;(2)For run-on sentences,division and addition could be adopted to express the implied logical relationship in Chinese through grammar and vocabulary,so as to enhance the sense of rhythm of the semantics of the translation;For nonsubject sentences,the application of passive tense and transformation of nonsubject components into subject have achieved good performance in semantic expression and adaptation of syntactic structure;For parallel sentences,combination could be adopted to make the translation concise,or substitution could be adopted to enrich the language expression.It has certain guidance for the practice and research of C-E translation of scientific and technological information texts,which can be used as a practical reference. |
