This simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting report is based on the relevant analysis and commentary on the characters in Water Margin made by Pan Zhichang,a famous Chinese aesthetician and one of the representatives of contemporary Chinese post-practical aesthetics,at the Yangtze River Forum in 2020.In terms of the introduction to Chinese traditional cultural works, cultural defaults often occur due to the different cultural backgrounds and language systems of the East and the West.In this regard, this lecture also involves a large number of cultural defaults. To better serve audience from different countries with different cultural backgrounds and achieve the purpose of cross-cultural communication,it is necessary to solve difficulties caused by the cultural default, which is the main pain point in this simulated interpreting practice.Based on this simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting practice, the interpreter has comprehensively analyzed video recordings, transcribed manuscripts(bilingual)and audience feedback, and classified the difficulties in this simulated interpreting practice as follows according to the definitions and classification criteria of cultural default:(1)difficulty caused by material cultural default;(2)difficulty caused by language cultural default;(3)difficulty caused by social cultural default. The above three difficulties affect the accuracy, completeness, and fluency of the simulated simultaneous interpreting,as well as the overall experience of the audience. This report takes Vermeer’s Skopos theory as the theoretical framework, and proposes corresponding solutions to the above three interpretation difficulties:(1)use transliteration with annotation and paraphrasing methods to solve the difficulty caused by material cultural default;(2)use summarization and domestication methods to solve the difficulty caused by language cultural default;(3)use the amplification and paraphrasing methods to solve the difficulty caused by social cultural default. To sum up,under the guidance of the Skopos theory, the interpreter has put forward corresponding countermeasures, which can help apply the theory in practice and deepen the understanding of the theoretical connotation, and can help deepen and improve the relevant theoretical research on the difficulties caused by cultural default,to provide a certain reference for simultaneous interpreters who may deal with similar interpreting work in the future.
