This is a project report on the translation which focuses on the part of Forgetting: The Benefits of Not Remembering by neuroscientist and psychiatrist Scott A.Small(hereinafter referred to as Forgetting).The book analyzes the benefits of forgetting by describing the experiences of patients with pathological amnesia,autism,post-traumatic stress disorder,etc.,and focuses on the role of sleep in helping us forget,intending to get readers to treat memory loss rationally.The book Forgetting is an informative text characterized by complex sentence structures and knowledge of neurology.Guided by Nida’s Functional Equivalence,the author analyzes the case from three perspectives: lexical,syntactic,and textual equivalence.The lexical level includes complete equivalence,partial equivalence,and lack of equivalence;at the sentence level,it mainly analyzes how to adjust the sentence order of the long and difficult sentences,so that it conforms to the reader’s reading habits.Inversion,Division,and Restructuring are used in this part;at the discourse level,it analyzes the textual equivalence of Chinese and English from the perspective of cohesion and coherence.The summary of the report includes the enlightenment and lessons that the author drew during the translation process,as well as some unresolved problems.The author is very conscious that well preparation is a shortcut to success.Meanwhile,to make the translation authentic and smooth,the translator not only needs to be erudite but also should learn translation skills from masters by reading their translations.The road of translation is by no means an easy one.Only by reading more,practicing more,and learning more can we achieve an ideal realm.
