English teachers’ professional development level and classroom teaching quality level promote each other.English teachers’ professional development is achieved through classroom teaching.English teachers’ professional development level affects the quality of English classroom teaching;English teachers with the high level of professional development in classroom teaching are the key to improving their education level.Based on classroom teaching observation,investigating and studying the professional development level of English teachers is of great theoretical and practical significance.There are 3 research questions:(1)What is the professional development status of Kashi high school English teachers in classroom teaching currently?(2)What are the problems in the professional development of Kashi high school English teachers?What is the root of the problems?(3)How can teachers,schools and education administrative departments promote the professional development of high school English teachers in Kashi,so as to improve the Kashi high school English classroom teaching level?This research takes English teachers of two representative high schools in Kashi as the research subject.English teachers’ professional development present situation in the classroom teaching were investigated by questionnaire.The professional development level of teachers in 36 classes of high school Grade two English classes were observed and recorded by classroom observation scale.The data were processed by SPSS software,and nine of the English teachers were interviewed.The following conclusions were drawn through qualitative and quantitative analysis:(1)The current situation of professional development of high school English teachers in Kashi is as follows: 95.45% high school English teachers have good teaching methods and correct teaching attitude.The professional development level of senior teachers with high professional titles is higher than that of junior teachers with low professional titles.Teachers’ ability to use advanced teaching media in English classroom teaching is not strong.The degree of ideological and political integration into English classroom is not high,and teachers’ listening and speaking ability in English classroom teaching is not smooth.(2)At present,there are four problems in the professional development of high school English teachers in Kashi city: insufficient accumulation of English subject teaching knowledge and Chinese excellent traditional culture,a small number of teachers lacking patience and love for students with learning difficulties,lack of research ability,and no habit of teaching reflection.Through further interviews with 9 of teachers,the researcher finds that the root causes of the problems are: internal factors such as the lack of self-motivation on professional development,external factors such as few opportunities for training outside,and the lack of giving full play to the organizational advantages of teaching and research groups which restricts the level of teacher professional development.(3)Based on the current situation and problems,the following suggestions are proposed:teachers should establish the concept of lifelong learning,formulate career development plans,accumulate subject teaching knowledge and Chinese excellent traditional culture,and put morality first in teaching and educating students,pay attention to research,teaching reflection habits,and receive assistance from schools,universities,educational administrative departments,governments and other levels to improve the professional development level of high school English teachers.
