After the birth of films, the "Chekhov’s Gun" theory was closely integrated with the film field. As an important narrative technique in suspense film scripts,it played an important role in laying the foundation for suspense, hiding the truth, and laying the groundwork, creating a deeper sense of suspense for such films and enhancing the audience’s viewing experience. The narrative technique of ’Chekhov’s Gun’ is crucial for the unresolved plot setting in suspense film narratives. As a gun hung in the script,it either runs through the entire text or suddenly appears, with no restrictions on the way it is used, and there is no unified time limit for the gun to sound. In suspense movies, this gun can be a seemingly unintentional line from a character,a habitual action,or a prop that appears unintentionally or deliberately in the camera scene. The director and screenwriter use them to lay the groundwork for suspense and wait for the appropriate opportunity to reappear in the later stage to promote the development of the plot.Mastering the rules of using the "Chekhov’s Gun" can provide more clever ways to set and release suspense for the creation of suspense films. On the basis of the basic concept of "Chekhov’s Gun",Chapter 1 of this article analyzes the ways in which "Chekhov’s Gun" appears in suspense films from various countries, summarizes its different usage methods, and provides case studies to demonstrate how "Chekhov’s Gun" combines with different time sequences in the film to promote the plot’s transition, and analyzes the carrier media of "Chekhov’s Gun" in the film;Chapter 2 demonstrates the thrust of "Chekhov’s Gun" on the development of suspense films from two aspects: the distinction between "urgency" and "slowness" in the release of suspense films,as well as the impact of "gunshots" on the development of the plot, which is "shallow" and "hidden";Chapter 3 explores the inspiration that "Chekhov’s Gun" brings to the narrative of domestic suspense films during the localization process;Chapter 4 applies the theory of "Chekhov’s Gun" through the script "Lotus as Face and Willow as Eyebrow".The development of the plot layer by layer is closely combined with the application of "Chekhov’s Gun" to analyze, practice, and summarize the use of this narrative technique, providing a certain reference for future suspense film creators.
