"The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is one of the four famous works in ancient China, with 400 characters portrayed in the works.Liu Bei is the main character among them, and he has also been regarded as one of the typical representatives of benevolence and righteousness in traditional Chinese culture.Character discourse can express the identity characteristics of a fictional character. In literature, character images are usually created based on the language of the character.Dialogue between characters is particularly crucial to the shaping of the overall character. From this,it is possible to analyze the style and characteristics of character speech acts and the reasons behind them. This study analyzes the use of personal deixis in Liu Bei’s discourse, and selects typical corpus from Liu Bei’s discourse, which is divided into four categories:suggestion, decision, request, and statement. It combines pragmatic theories such as pragmatic empathy and alienation, pragmatic principles(including Chinese politeness principles),conversational implicature, adaptation theory, speech acts, face theory, and politeness strategies, and uses other disciplines such as psychology and literature to assist in analysis,This paper conducts a sequential analysis of pragmatic principles for Liu Bei’s verbal dialogue content in different contexts, and studies the pragmatic methods often used by Liu Bei in verbal communication.Based on the classification and analysis of various pragmatic behavior patterns highlighted in Liu Bei’s discourse,it concludes the pragmatic characteristics of Liu Bei’s discourse, and explores pragmatic methods that are more suitable for the analysis of Chinese classical character images.Through investigating the use of personal deixis by Liu Bei,it is found that Liu Bei attaches great importance to the application of politeness principles in daily communication.Regardless of the identity of the other person,Liu Bei will give sufficient enthusiasm and respect to the interlocutor, which helps Liu Bei reduce the distance from others in his discourse. In addition, what often appears in Liu Bei’s discourse is his insistence on benevolence and righteousness. This study selects the dialogue content between Liu Bei and different roles, uses pragmatic theoretical knowledge, and analyzes the rationality and logicality of Liu Bei’s discourse in combination with context. It proves that Liu Bei’s insistence on benevolence and righteousness is only the strategy and publicity method he adopts for the development of his own power, and is not the most essential feature of Liu Bei’s language. Finally,by classifying and summarizing the pragmatic behaviors in Liu Bei’s discourse sequences, analyzing the strategies used by Liu Bei when negotiating successfully and the reasons for their failure,it is found that Liu Bei has excellent situational judgment ability. On this basis,Liu Bei will hide his true thoughts by deliberately violating the qualitative criteria, and skillfully use the praise criteria to test the true intentions of the other party,At the same time,Liu Bei will also flexibly use the name of benevolence and righteousness to construct his own righteous identity in conversation,in order to gain verbal initiative.
