| Liang Lei(1972-),a composer of Chinese descent,is the "President and Distinguished Professor" of the University of California,San Diego,and the Director of the Composing Discipline of the Music Department.In recent years,he has received considerable attention from the domestic and foreign music academia,and his works have repeatedly won international awards.At the end of 2019,his symphonic work "Thousands of Mountains and Rivers" won the Gwen Meier Prize,which is known as the highest international composer award,becoming the second Chinese American composer to receive this award after Tan Dun.So far,Liang Lei has created many influential works.The research object of this thesis is Liang Lei’s "Five Seasons",which was commissioned by "Shanghai String Quartet" in 2010."Five Seasons" is a mixed chamber music work of pipa and string quartet.When creating such works,it is necessary to balance the timbre and sound of Chinese and Western instruments,emphasizing the interplay of the graininess of plucked instruments and the linearity of string instruments;Emphasize the unique colors that blend the distinct timbres of the two instruments.This paper explores Liang Lei’s use and development of various timbre techniques for Chinese musical instruments,such as pipa,the shaping of mixed chamber music sound,and his pursuit of Chinese history,culture,and traditional artistic aesthetics.All of these have great implications for the author.The thesis focuses on analyzing and studying the inspiration of composers’ composing techniques,their cross-cultural creative thinking,and their creative style,and attempts to interpret the uniqueness of Liang Lei’s musical language.These include the recognition of multiple structures,the integration of multicultural pitch organization,the integration and separation of timbre and sound,the flexible use of composition techniques,the unique aesthetic perception of traditional Chinese art,and the creative thinking of multiple cultures that are separated,interwoven,and blended.Through the analysis of Liang Lei’s "Five Seasons",a mixed chamber music work,I hope to obtain inspiration for my creation from the aspects of aesthetic pursuit,artistic conception shaping,timbre and sound. |
