The Study Of New Youth And Chinese Drama Reformation Movement

As the core position of the New Culture Movement,New Youth circle actively participated in the movement of Chinese drama reformation.The editors of New Youth followed the example of East Asia and Europe dramatic works and translated a large number of overseas excellent dramas into China.In order to enhance the effect of drama translation and introduction,they focused on translating famous masterpieces,adopting easy-to-understand vernacular language,and adhering to the basic literal translation strategy,so that modern Chinese drama could be integrated into the trend of world drama.From March 1917 to November 1918,a fierce drama debate took place between the old Chinese drama critics headed by Hu Shi and Qian Xuantong and the old Chinese drama fans led by Zhang Houzai and Feng Shuluan.Ouyang Yuqian and Song Chunfang were also involved.With the deepening of the confrontation of drama theory,the editors of New Youth actively advocated the concept of new dramas,which promoted individualism,realism,evolutionism and tragedy to be deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.Among many theatrical reformers,Hu Shi was inspired by Ibsen and A Doll’s House to break through old Chinese dramas,and he created the landmark one-act drama called An Important Event in One’s Life.Through parallel research on A Doll’s House and An Important Event in One’s Life,the historical contributions and objective limitations of the creation of this new drama were explored.The study of New Youth and Chinese drama reform movement has the following implications for Chinese modern drama: First of all,fully respect the cultural subjectivity of the nation,and promote Chinese drama to go abroad.Secondly,use the global vision to introduce overseas excellent literature and art.Finally,it takes the advantages of both Chinese and Western dramas to construct a modern drama art with both national and global aesthetic characteristics.
