The drama in the new era has a extremely important status in the history of modern Chinese drama:it inherits the important task of the enlightenment and creates a modern system of drama. Conscious exploration and practice of art,rigorous debate and construction on the theory,that cause the great change from habitually follow political direction, and the dependency of pragmatism such as thought carrier, advocacy tools, to consciously pursue and establish its independent status and unique creation as art subject. It was an age of passion and ideals, in which drama man with mercy and great passion to create plays and study theories, trying to complete the artistic practice with double standards of aesthetic and enlightenment in 1980s. As the international and domestic political situation, social environment, times have changed, those also immediately reflected on the dramatic arts, entertainment-oriented commercial theatre starting on stage. Drama is a art form of trend-leading, the development of drama in new era profoundly reflect the social and cultural environment, stand on the forefront, and lead the trend in the creation of contemporary art in China.There have been two tides of modernism in the process of modernization of Chinese drama. During the first tide happened in 1920s to 1930s, playwright synchronic selectively imitated and essayed diversified genre of modernist drama, but their efforts mostly were put on the shelf rarely were showed in the theatre. The tide of modern drama in the new era have diachronically changed along with the changes in social development and ideological evolution—surging of pioneer thoughts influence of commercial factors, arrival of mass culture in the era of consumption, it’s artistic achievements are reflected in the style of directors and manifestation of the stage.In view of this, modern drama as a foreign thought influenced Chinese drama, that is undulate. (the influence on Chinese drama by modern drama as a foreign thought was undulate). Even Chinese modern drama influenced by it demonstrated analogous surface of emotion, but the their footstone needed for survival is different. Modern drama practitioners easily took a major change in artistic style, once the time and circumstances changed. This paper will review the development of the new era drama, trying to discover its trajectories and characteristics of modernity, exploring the fate of modern drama in China.This paper will be based on theory of modernity as a guide to outline development trajectories and characteristics of the new era drama. First, this paper will describe the stage of development of the new era drama, combing and speculate related problems with the breakthrough point of modernistic eyes. Next this paper will mainly delimit the research category centre on the theory and concept of modernity presented in Five Faces of Modernity by Matei Calinescu, such as avant-garde, kitsch art etc, select representative of playwright and dramas for analysis, present the development fate of modernistic drama in the new era, and try to research its profound culture and social factors while describe phenomena, and analyses cases.
