| This translation practice is drawn from chapter 7 of the textbook on the subject of art history,Non-Western Art: Asia,Africa,Oceania,and America.The book was published in 2020 by Cambridge Press,and its author is Nancy Kelker,a Professor of Art History at Tennessee State University.The content of the book covers architecture,religion,and historical knowledge.After reading and analyzing the original text,the translator found that the original text is a cross-cultural informative text from English as a lingua franca.The style of the original text is concise.But it contains a plethora of culturally loaded words,proper nouns,and terminology in the field of art history,requiring a great deal of background information to achieve cultural contextualization.In response to the characteristics of the source text,the translator selected the thick translation,a commonly-used theory in cross-cultural translation,to guide this translation project.The translator listed eighteen typical examples in the fourth chapter to analyze the application of explicit thick translation and implicit thick translation strategies in the translation report.The former employs paratextual devices of footnotes and in-text annotation to achieve cultural contextualization,whereas the latter uses the means of amplification and paraphrasing.This translation practice report contains five chapters.The first chapter introduces the background of this translation practice;the second chapter describes the translation process before,during,and after translation;the third chapter introduces the current situation of domestic and international studies on Appiah’s thick translation theory and its suitability for this translation project;the fourth chapter explores the practical application of thick translation theory by comparing the original text with the translation;the last chapter summarises the gains and limitations of this translation practice. |
