| In today’s world,China is actively increasing its in-depth interaction with the world in the economic,political,and scientific and technological fields.As an essential bridge to promote the exchange between countries,English for Science and Technology(EST)plays a very important role.People’s demand for the English translation of science and technology is increasing,and the quality of Chinese translation is improving.Southwest University of Science and Technology(SWUST)has launched the project “Research on Nuclear Waste Disposal”.The author undertook to translate the Chapter 8 on Advisory Material for the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material(2012 Edition).This report is based on this material.Guided by the linguist Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory,the author firstly analyzes the contextual cohesion,intertextuality,and sequencing of the source text from the perspective of contextual correlates of adaptability.Secondly,this report discusses the nominalization and passive sentences as utterance-building ingredients of structural objects of adaptability,and analyzes the applicable translation methods and techniques to meet the way of thinking and reading habits of readers by combining specific cases.Finally,the report illustrates that the choice and use of translation is a process of dynamic adaptability with contextual relations and language structure,from the lexical meaning choice to the division and reconstruction of long and difficult sentences.Outlined by contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability and dynamics of adaptability,the author expects that the case studies can enrich the practical application of Adaptation Theory and provide reference for the integration of EST translation practice with Adaptation Theory.Meanwhile,the translation practice strives to meet the conciseness and objectivity of scientific and technical language with the satisfaction of Chinese writing habits,so as to realize information exchange. |
