| The problem of global obesity has become increasingly prominent over time, which has caused adverse effects on individuals, families and the society. Therefore, translating such English articles into Chinese is of reference value for the Chinese readers in our country. This thesis is a report on the Chinese translation of six English texts on the main causes of obesity. They are chosen from the “Obesity Causes” section on the website of Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health(https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/obesity-prevention-source/).This website is quite authoritative since its founder is the top college of Harvard University, ranking second in the United States.Besides, there are many academic papers at home and abroad referring to the content of the website. The source texts are featured with both informative and vocative functions.Based on Newmark’s communicative translation theory, much attention is paid to the effective communication of the content in the translation.Analyses are made on the typical translation problems and the corresponding solutions in this translation practice report. The problems include the uncertainty about the translation of the proper nouns, the lack of logical consistency in the translation of the headlines and the inadequate translation of the content concerning cultural differences. The corresponding translation strategies include the determination of the translation of the proper nouns by further searching the authoritative information, the modification of the headline translation according to the intratextual coherence and the use of footnotes to explain the background knowledge.By doing this translation, the translator realizes that she should make more preparation before translation and further improve the searching ability and other translation abilities.Hopefully, this report may be helpful for the translation activities concerned. |
