The Construction Of The Theoretical Model Of Sibling Competition And Scale Development

Under the influence of the three-child policy,the proportion of only children will decrease,and more and more children will have their own brothers and sisters.Family system theory states that the increase or decrease of family members will disrupt the original balanced and stable way of getting along with the family until a new equilibrium emerges.For first-born children,the birth of a younger sibling can cause discomfort and resistance to younger siblings,which can lead to jealousy and competition,which are normal emotional responses in the development of individual.Families with many children will inevitably have competition among their siblings.As a lifelong relationship,sibling relationship has a profound influence on the growth and development of individuals.And sibling competition will not only reduce the quality of sibling relationship,excessive sibling competition will also increase the difficulty of parenting parents,and even have a negative impact on individual development.Therefore,it is of great significance to pay attention to the influencing factors and mechanism of sibling competition in order to avoid the negative effects of sibling competition effectively and build a positive and harmonious sibling relationship.So,this study will adopt a combination of qualitative and quantitative research to build a theoretical model of sibling competition,and develop a sibling competition scale.This study consists of the following two parts:Study 1: Constructing the theoretical model of sibling competition.Twenty-two subjects were selected to conduct interviews on the theme of sibling competition,and the interview texts were transcribed and coded step by step.Explore the connotation and performance of sibling competition,what factors are affected by it,and what effects the experience of sibling competition will have on the development of individuals.Study 2: Develop the sibling competition scale.Based on the results of previous studies and interviews,the project pool of sibling competition scale was developed.Test the reliability and validity of the primary and secondary scales,it provides a tool for measuring sibling competition.And initially used among college students.The research conclusions are as follows:First,the theoretical model of sibling competition includes five parts:background of sibling competition,purpose of sibling competition,strategy of sibling competition,intervention of sibling competition and aftereffect of sibling competition.The background of sibling competition describes the origin of sibling competition from the perspectives of parents,siblings themselves and traditional family concepts.Sibling competition purpose and sibling competition strategy describe the motivation and behavior of individuals engaged in sibling competition.Sibling competition intervention explains the influence of parenting on sibling competition;The effect of sibling competition indicates the effect of sibling competition on individual growth and development.Second,the Sibling Competition Scale consists of 13 items,including preference seeking,sibling competition and sibling transcendence.This scale has good reliability and validity,and can be used as a tool to measure sibling competition.Third,sibling competition differs significantly in terms of gender,sibling age difference and the seniority among brothers and sisters.The sibling competition level of male students is significantly higher than that of female students.The smaller the age difference between siblings,the higher the level of sibling competition;The level of sibling competition of individuals ranked third and above was significantly higher than that of individuals ranked first.
