As a national treasure, classical Chinese poetry has rich aesthetic and cultural value, and its imagery is an important carrier of the poet’s emotions. The export of Chinese culture calls for high-quality poetry translations, while imagery translation is the key and challenging point in translating ancient Chinese poetry into English. However, the relevant researches are far from enough, and there are problems, including insufficient research samples, the single research method, etc. With the rise of cognitive science, the influence of "cognitive turn" has gradually spread to most humanities and social sciences fields, which has also injected new theoretical impetus into literature and translation studies. As an interdisciplinary method of studying literature, cognitive poetics emphasizes the use of cognitive science in literary study, which can be widely applied to various literary works, and incredibly poetic language analysis. In recent years, although many studies have emerged in this field, there are still problems, such as unclear research paths, ineffective theoretical tools, and a lack of translation studies. The poetic schema theory proposed by Stockwell in 2002 systematically elaborates on six types of schema management and three fields of schema management. However,as a mature path of literary criticism,it has not yet received the attention of researchers.Based on this background, this study aims to provide a new perspective for the evaluation and practice of imagery translation in classical Chinese poetry and to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of poetic schema as a theoretical tool in cognitive poetics and translation studies. It has particular practical significance for disseminating Chinese culture and enriching the practice of cognitive poetics. In addition, this thesis proposes an analytical framework of imagery translation on the basis of the poetic schema theory and the characteristics of classical Chinese poetry imagery, reflecting the vital innovation. This thesis takes the English translation of Li Qingzhao’s Selected Ci-Poems by Xu Yuanchong as the research object and organizes the high-frequency core images in sixty poetic works into six categories based on their connotations:animal imagery, plant imagery, astronomical imagery, weather imagery, ornament and furnishing imagery, and festival imagery. And then, from the perspective of Stockwell’s poetic schema theory, their translations are analyzed with the new framework.Research has found that the translator always presents the imagery in the whole schema during the translation process and chooses three types of schema management:schema preservation, schema accretion, and schema refreshment, which have a corresponding impact on the schema construction centering on imagery in the target reader’s mind.In addition, the choice of schema management in translation mainly depends on the target reader’s understanding of the source language imagery.Specifically, schema preservation can be achieved through word selection and order restoration.Schema accretion mainly relies on the supplement of rhyme beauty, color, dynamic sense, spatial sense, contrast effect, and cultural background.Schema refreshment is mainly achieved by adding annotations and establishing the affective tone. |
