PUA(Pick-up Artist)originated in the West, originally belonging to the American subculture community, and aimed to teach men how to improve themselves and gain the favour of women, but with the publication and bestselling of The Game,PUA gradually evolved into a technical means of using techniques to manipulate women for sexual purposes. After its introduction to China around 2008,PUA originally existed as a niche subculture in the online community, but due to the influence of Western liberalism, its techniques and discourse revealed more objectification and discrimination against women, and had anti-feminist characteristics, and in the process of collision with Chinese traditional culture, its concept and behavioural characteristics were extended accordingly. There are few studies on PUA in China, but more descriptive and qualitative studies on PUA,and the definition of PUA is not clear yet,and few studies have explored the factors influencing their victimisation from the perspective of victims. The purpose of this study is to develop a validated measurement tool for measuring intimate PUA victimisation in the Chinese context from the victim’s perspective,to improve the quantitative study of PUA,and to explore the characteristics of intimate PUA victimisation and the corresponding influencing mechanisms in the Chinese context. The aim of Study 1 is to develop a validated measure of intimate relationship PUA in the Chinese context and to explore the factor structure of intimate relationship PUA victimisation.Through a review of the literature and a qualitative study of social representation theory,we first identified the social representations of PUA in the Chinese context, explored the structure of its social representations, identified the central element of PUA social representations as controlling behaviour, combined semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires to form a pool of items for the initial version of the Intimate Relationship PUA Victimisation Scale, and identified 15 items through exploratory factor analysis. The three factors were:power manipulation, emotional blackmail, and value denial.Study 2 conducted the corresponding reliability and validity tests for the Intimate Relationship PUA Victimisation Scale,as well as exploring intimate relationship PUA victimisation and differences in demographic variables. The reliability of the Intimate PUA Victimisation Scale was tested with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.925 for the total scale and a range of Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.819 to 0.875 for the dimensions. The results met the measurement criteria. The scale was found to be a stable and reliable instrument for measuring intimate PUA victimisation.Subsequent analyses of demographic differences in intimacy PUA victimisation among emotionally experienced adults in China showed that:women were significantly more victimised by intimacy PUA than men;subjects aged 18-30 were significantly more subject to power manipulation than those aged 43-54,and those aged43-54 were significantly more victimised on the value negation dimension than those aged31-42.The level of victimisation on the value negation dimension was significantly higher for subjects with a rural home location than for those with an urban location;and the level of PUA victimisation was significantly higher for subjects with left-behind experiences than for those without left-behind experiences.Study 3 explored the moderating role of the left-behind experience in the relationship between adult attachment and intimate PUA victimization. The results found that the presence or absence of stay-at-home experiences differed significantly on the attachment anxiety dimension, with individuals with stay-at-home experiences having significantly higher levels of attachment anxiety than those without stay-at-home experiences;in the relationship between adult attachment and intimate relationship PUA victimization, proximity dependence was significantly negatively related to PUA victimization, attachment anxiety was significantly positively related to intimate relationship PUA victimization, and using stay-at-home experiences as a third-party variable in the relationship between adult attachment and There was no moderating effect between adult attachment and intimate relationship PUA victimization using stay-at-home experience as a third-party variable,i.e.,there was no significant effect of stay-at-home experience on the relationship between adult attachment and intimate relationship PUA victimization. In summary, this study adopted a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches to develop the Intimacy PUA Victimisation Scale in the Chinese context and explored the intimacy PUA victimisation of adult individuals with emotional experiences in the Chinese context.Based on the analysis of demographic differences in the study results, with women reporting higher levels of victimisation than men, individuals with a stay-at-home experience reporting higher levels of victimisation than those without a stay-at-home experience, and dimensional differences in age and home location, the findings demonstrate that although male victims now exist as well, women are still the main group being victimised by PUA and therefore attention to women, especially stay-at-home Adult attachment type influences the individual’s response to emotions, attachment anxiety positively predicts the individual’s intimate PUA victimisation, and individuals with higher levels of attachment anxiety are more likely to be victimised by PUA.
