| This translation report is based on the book Viruses: Intimate Invaders written by Van G.Wilson and published by Springer in March 2022.The book offers an introduction to virology and the latest advances in anti-viral treatment strategies, including vaccines,in easy-to-understand language, and discusses the origin of various viruses and their impact on humans. The author chose Chapter 10 as the source text for this translation project, which focuses on vaccines. This translation practice aims to popularize vaccine-related knowledge among the general public, providing access to comprehensive information about vaccines,in order to eliminate misconceptions and anxieties about vaccines and increase vaccination rates. The author translates the source text under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation,as proposed by Peter Newmark. The linguistic features of the source text are analyzed in detail at the lexical level, syntactic level and textual level, and examples are given from the following categories to demonstrate the application of semantic and communicative translation in the translation project: the translation of technical terms, title and subtitles,as well as nominalized structures;the translation of “there-be” existential sentences, attributive clauses, and passive sentences;and the realization of cohesion and coherence in the whole text.In order to achieve the purposes of semantic translation and communicative translation, the author utilizes the translation method of literal translation and translation skills such as conversion, division, change of voice and annotation, hoping to obtain a highly accurate and readable translation. |
