Since the beginning of the 21st century, more and more attention has been paid to medical translation. However, the majority of studies tends to concentrate on medical terms, and there is still a lack of translation studies that deal with the issues in medical translation from a more comprehensive perspective. Therefore, this paper selects a medical report from WHO,and under the guidance of Newmark's theories, the researcher attempts to propose effective solutions to the difficulties in medical translation. The main body of this paper consists of two sections:the translation project(with the original juxtaposed with the translation)and the translation commentary. The original text has several features, such as frequent use of technical terms and complicated syntactical structures, and it can be difficult for non-professional readers to understand. Therefore, translators need to make sure that the information is effectively delivered while maintaining the readability. In the translation commentary, the researcher briefly summarizes the existing studies on medical translation and Newmark's theories, and proceeds to focus on how to use the principles of semantic and communicative translation.Newmark categorizes texts into expressive, informative and operative ones, and proposes the ideas of semantic and communicative translation.Using his theories as a guiding principle, the researcher comes up with different approaches to the difficulties in medical translation, with the support of specific examples from the translation project. This paper aims to provide guidance for those who practice medical translation.Hopefully, translators can use semantic and communicative translation properly to tackle the problems in medical translation, and produce translations with better quality.
