| The opening of the Kiungchow trading port in 1876 allowed the closed and backward Hainan Island to gradually begin to converge with the international world,with enormous and far-reaching economic changes and social impacts on the island.This paper takes the opening of Kiungchow trading port as a starting point and focuses on the import and export of goods.It explores how Kiungchow port played the role of economic radiation after 1876.This role that brought almost the entire Hainan Island into the scope of the hinterland and largely changed the economic,industrial,and market structure of the hinterland,Hainan Island began to change from a traditional inward-oriented economy to a modern outward-oriented economy.At the same time Haikou,as the biggest beneficiary of the opening of the port,economic and political status has been significantly enhanced.This paper is divided into four chapters : the first chapter introduces the basic economic conditions of Hainan’s agriculture,fishery,and trade before the opening of the port;the second chapter discusses in detail the opening of the port of Kiungchow and the changes that occurred in the island’s economy from 1876 to 1895;the third chapter focuses on the development of commercialization and outward-oriented economy of Hainan into the 20 th century;the fourth chapter discusses the radiating effect of the port of Haikou on the island’s economy.Finally,this paper summarizes the impact of the opening of the port on the modern island of Hainan,and what it tells us about the construction of Hainan today. |
