“Saam Kap Dai” literature was a hybrid literary style popularized in Hong Kong during the 1950 s and 1960 s.Its distinct characteristics lie in mixed use of Classical Chinese,Vernacular Chinese, and Cantonese, making the works accessible and relatable to readers from various linguistic backgrounds.“Saam Kap Dai” literature depicts the daily lives of the working class in Hong Kong, reflecting popular customs and social issues of the time.It has great cultural significance and value for the study of literary and language development,as well as social and cultural evolution in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. However, its literary value has been largely underestimated, and its historical impact overlooked due to the lack of author and critic recognition. There is limited research on its themes, literary style, artistic value, language strategies, and historical significance. This thesis will focus on textual analysis and cultural study to explore the evolution and literary connotations of “Saam Kap Dai” literature and its contribution to Hong Kong’s cultural heritage. This study aims to extract insights that resonate with contemporary society. The thesis is divided into four chapters,as follows:Chapter one aims to define the concept of “Saam Kap Dai” literature and trace its evolutionary history.First, clarifying the definition of “Saam Kap Dai” literature and what kind of articles can be classified as such.Second, reviewing “Saam Kap Dai” literature’s history, which can be traced back to the Cantonese oral arts in the Ming and Qing dynasties and its mature development in the 1950 s and 1960 s.Chapter two examines the flourishing period of “Saam Kap Dai” literature as well as the transformation of its style in the later period. The rise of “Saam Kap Dai” literature was deeply connected with the development of Hong Kong’s journalism.By reviewing the impact of various factors such as economics, culture, and society in Hong Kong,as well as investigating the works of prominent “Saam Kap Dai” writers,we can analyze the developmental trajectory of this literary style in Hong Kong. The chapter also discusses the transition of “Saam Kap Dai” literature to a new form that mixed Vernacular Chinese,Cantonese, and English in the 1980 s.Chapter three focuses on revealing the historical narrative and linguistic hybridity of“Saam Kap Dai” literature through close textual analysis and internal research. This chapter is divided into two parts: firstly, exploring the most representative depictions of working-class life and the implied social and political views of “Saam Kap Dai” literature;secondly, analyzing the artistic features of this unique mixed-language style that blended Classical Chinese,Vernacular Chinese, and Cantonese.Chapter four situates “Saam Kap Dai” literature within its historical and cultural context to demonstrate its value and significance as a reflection of cultural identity and social reality. This chapter delves into the cultural meaning and literary value of “Saam Kap Dai” literature and its relevance to contemporary literary construction in the Greater Bay Area.
