Shu Xiangcheng is a well known local writer of Hong Kong. Because of theidentity of native-born in Hong Kong, he could observe and portray the metropolisexquisitely, and makes Hong Kong a distinctive world in his works. Observe thenovels written by Shu Xiangcheng, we found that in his novel text we could not onlysee the changing trail of the physical landscape in a metropolis, but in the same time,we could also feel the spiritual changing trail of people in Hong Kong during thechanging times. His leisure and lyric written language shows us the beauty ofhumanity on the traditional native soil and also lashes the distorted humanity which isalienated by desire.This research mainly discusses how the novel texts composed by ShuXiangcheng portray and rethink the metropolis ecology of Hong Kong from threeaspects. In the first part of this master dissertation, I would try to observe how ShuXiangcheng observe and portray the metropolis space in his novel texts by usingterms of theory like Spatial Theory, and analysis the spiritual and cultural meaningcontained behind the metropolis space.In the second part of the dissertation I willmainly analysis the images of a group of characters to research what is the characters’psychology and mental outlook like in the urbanize changing process of Hong Kong.The third part of the dissertation mainly discusses the relationship among the warexperience of Shu Xiangcheng, the existential experience in the process of changingfrom traditional native soil to modern metropolis and the deliberateness of thecomplex relationship between modernity and coloniality, via the discussion of thosethree aspects I could analysis the writer’s psychology in writing which influenced by the multiple cultures.By researching and analyzing those three parts of the distinctive value of novelswritten by Shu Xiangcheng, I will evaluate the novels written by Shu Xiangcheng inthe vision of literary history. Thus we could sufficiently comprehend the value andthe important meaning of Shu Xiangcheng in the history of literature.
