Population health is the study of the health of the total population.Confronted with the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic,workshops worldwide have been organized to discuss and research on population health and the countermeasures to the crises in the field of public health.The source text for this translation task is selected from the first four chapters of the proceedings Population Health in Challenging Times: Insights from Key Domains,which is a conference minutes of a roundtable workshop.It introduces how the different domains in the field of population health improve population health in the midst of the two major crises they are confronting—racial injustice and the COVID-19 pandemic.As a proceedings of a Workshop,it uses formal language and it is scientific and informative.The original text adopts a general-specific structure,with the first chapter providing an overview of the full text and then every chapter describing the insights from key domains.It includes a lot of declarative sentences.In addition,it contains some terminologies,semi-technical terms,technical terms and proper names of people and institutions.But it is easy for the nonprofessionals to understand.Thus,it has the features of a popular science text.This report illustrates how the translator accomplishes the translation task by utilizing different translation strategies,methods and techniques based on J.C.Catford’s Shifts Theory.During the translation process,the translator mainly adopted translation strategy of domestication,translation methods of literal translation and liberal and techniques of addition,omission,division,conversion,etc.to maintain the scientificity,informativeness and popularity of popular science texts.The translator finds that Shifts Theory could provide guidance for the translation of popular science texts through this task and hopes that this report could provide certain reference for the future translation of popular science texts in public health.The translator also hopes to bring some inspiration to all sectors of society to improve population health and to provide some advice for related organizations to respond to public health emergencies.
