A Study Of Xie Wudang’s Calligraphy

As a literary master and great calligrapher in the last century,Xie Wuliang has a great influence on the calligraphy art for later generations.He never stopped learning calligraphy during his lifetime,what made him become a model of the integration of inscriptions and the promotion of poetry,prose and calligraphy.This paper analyzes and researches Xie Wuliang’s calligraphy from multiple perspectives,for example,his achievements in poetic prose,Confucianism,Taoism,Buddhism and art.Xie’s calligraphy not only attached importance to the inheritance of calligraphy of Wei and Jin Dynasties and Southern and Northern Dynasties inscriptions,but also influenced by contemporary calligraphy.By analyzing the characteristics and artistic features of Xie Wuliang’s works in different periods,the changes of his calligraphy are much clearer for me.His personal experience,literary accomplishments and ideological connotation has been providing nourishment for the formation of calligraphy art.Under the influence of both external and internal skills,Xie Wuliang eventually formed his unique calligraphy style.Through collecting,sorting out,reading and analyzing the chronology,Xie’s poetry manuscripts,works,papers,periodicals and so on related to his calligraphy,the author first made a relatively detailed exposition of Xie Wuliang’s calligraphy style,calligraphy causes,and calligraphy ideas.Secondly,the author analyzes the formation and development of his calligraphy in different periods and the outstanding achievements of regular script and running cursive script from the aspects of composition,structure,and technique of writing calligraphy.Subsequently,by comparing with the calligraphy works of Zhong You and Yan Zhenqing,the author has a clearer understanding of Xie Wuliang’s calligraphy writing method.Coupled with the comments of Xie Wuliang’s relatives and friends on his calligraphy and the inscriptions and postscripts on some of his own inscriptions,we can roughly explore the mystery of his calligraphy.Xie Wuliang’s extensive calligraphy methods,combined the charm of Jin Dynasties with the charm of inscriptions,weakened the characteristics of calligraphy methods,and made a huge achievement.The study of Xie Wuliang’s calligraphy has inspired and influenced our learning of calligraphy,which helps the author make a deeper analysis and summary based on it.
