The pursuit of well-being is one of the eternal goals of human beings.In recent years,researchers have examined factors that influence well-being and found that materialism values can predict well-being levels.Junior high school students are in a critical period of values formation.Exploring the relationship between materialism values and well-being in junior high school students,understanding the mechanism of perceived social support and basic psychological needs in it,and putting forward corresponding educational strategies will help improve their well-being and achieve the educational goals of the new era.In this study,a questionnaire method was used to investigate a total of 1,379 students in the cities of Hebi,Anyang,and Shangqiu in Henan province,using the Materialism Values Scale,the Perceived Social Support Scale,the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale,and the Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale as research tools.The study explored the relationship between materialism values,perceived social support,basic psychological needs,and well-being.According to the actual questionnaire survey results,we carried out statistical methods such as descriptive analysis,t-test,analysis of variance,and multiple mediation analysis for significant data processing.It was found that:(1)The level of well-being of junior high school students was in the upper middle level,and there were obvious differences in gender,grade,place of origin and whether they are only children.The materialism values of junior high school students was at the lower middle level.And the differences in gender,grade,place of origin and whether they are only children were significant in junior high school students.The perceived social support was at a medium level and and there were marked differences in gender,grade,place of origin and whether they are only children.The basic psychological needs of junior high school students was in the upper middle level.The differences in gender,grade,place of origin and whether they are only children were also significant.(2)Materialism values and well-being were negatively correlated obviously.Materialism values and perceived social support were negatively correlated.Materialism values and basic psychological needs were negatively correlated as well.Perceived social support and well-being were positively correlated.Basic psychological needs and well-being were positively correlated.Perceived social support partially mediated between materialism values and well-being,and basic psychological needs also partially mediated between materialism values and well-being.Perceived social support and basic psychological needs played a multi intermediary role between materialism values and well-being.Based on the above results,the conclusions of this study are as follows: Junior high school students’ materialism values not only had a direct impact on well-being,but also indirectly affected the level of well-being through perceived social support and basic psychological needs.According to the above research results,the following educational implications are put forward: First,pay attention to the mental health of junior high school students,take cultivating happy junior high school students as the goal of educating people.Second,carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture,root the socialism core values,and lead students to form correct materialism values.Third,create a good educational atmosphere,innovate the forms of education,and improve the social support system for junior high school students comprehensively.Fourth,pay attention to the inner psychological needs of junior high school students,stimulate their own internal growth motivation,and promote the harmonious development of junior high school students in physical and mental health. |
