At present,with the rapid development of economy and media,contemporary high school students are exposed to more and more new things and different value orientations.For high school students who have not yet formed stable values,their pursuit and views on material things have also undergone great changes.Materialism is a kind of emphasizing the importance of possessing material wealth.And use this to define personal values of self-concept and personal achievement.Based on the idea of "phenomenon-mechanism-application",this study finds that social comparative tendency will increase materialism and reduce the sense of security of high school students,the sense of security will also affect materialism of high school students,and the level of self-esteem will also affect individual sense of security and materialism.Therefore,self-esteem and sense of security,variables closely related to individual growth,are introduced.This paper studies the status quo of high school students’ social comparative tendency,sense of security,self-esteem and materialism,and discusses the relationship between them and the mechanism of action on materialism.This study adopted the Iowa-Holland comparative Propensity Scale;Materialistic values MVS Chinese scale;Security self-rating scale SQ scale;Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale.This paper investigated the social comparative tendency,security,self-esteem and materialism of high school students from three high schools in Yunnan and Henan: Huize Experimental High School,Kunming Panlong Xinying Middle School and Puyang Jianye Foreign Language School,with 1147 valid questionnaires.By analyzing the data,the following conclusions are drawn:(1)The status quo of social comparative tendency,sense of security,self-esteem and materialism of high school students.Conclusions:(1)In terms of social comparative tendency,there is no significant difference between different grades in concept comparison;However,the comparative dimension of ability is significantly higher than that of senior three,and the social comparative tendency of senior two is significantly higher than that of senior three.In the comparison of family economy,the comparison dimension of ability shows "poor >Almost," while there was no significant difference between better and almost,and no significant difference between better and worse.In terms of the father’s education level,the comparative dimension of ideas of high school students with junior college education is significantly higher than that of their father’s education level: primary school,middle school,bachelor’s degree or above,but there is no significant difference in the comparative dimension of ability.(2)In terms of security: in terms of gender,the dimension of interpersonal security and sense of control of male students is significantly higher than that of female students.In the comparison of family economy,students who think their family economy is better than others and who have similar interpersonal security and sense of control score significantly higher than other high school students,namely "better>Poor;Almost.Poor ".In terms of parental divorce,high school students whose parents are divorced are significantly less secure than those whose parents are not divorced in determining the dimensions of sense of control.In the source of students,the score of interpersonal security of urban students is significantly higher than that of rural students.(3)In self-esteem: in the comparison of family economy,think their family economy is better self-esteem is higher than almost,almost higher than poor.In the area of origin,the self-esteem score of urban high school students is significantly higher than that of rural high school students.(4)In terms of materialism: In sex,Male students are significantly lower than female students in the dimension of acquiring property as the central dimension,while male students are significantly more materialistic than female students in the dimension of acquiring property and pursuing happiness.In terms of grade,the success dimension defined by property in Grade two is significantly higher than that in grade three and grade one.In the comparison of family economy,students who think their family economy is worse than others are significantly higher than other high school students in the materialistic success dimension defined by possessions.As for the only child,the only child scores significantly higher on the three dimensions of materialism than the non-only child high school students.In the case of divorced parents,scores on the success and central dimensions are significantly higher for divorced parents than for non-divorced parents.The scores of three dimensions of materialism from urban high school students are significantly higher than those from rural high school students.In terms of father’s education,the difference of father’s education in the dimension of success is compared with "middle school >Primary school;Junior college >Primary school ",the difference in the central dimension of the father’s education is compared with "junior college >Primary school;Undergraduate >Primary school;Junior college >Middle school ".In the aspect of mother’s education,the difference results of mother’s education in the dimension of success and happiness are compared as "middle school >Primary school;Junior college >Primary school";In the central dimension,the difference results of mother’s educational level are compared as "junior college >Primary school;Junior college >Middle school".(2)The relationship between social comparative tendency,security,self-esteem and materialism of high school students.There was a significant negative correlation between self-esteem and materialism,a significant positive correlation between self-esteem and sense of security,a significant positive correlation between social comparative tendency and materialism,a significant negative correlation between social comparative tendency and sense of security,and a significant negative correlation between materialism and sense of security.(2)Regression relationship:High school students’ social comparative tendency positively predicts materialism,security negatively predicts materialism,and social comparative tendency negatively predicts security.(3)Model relationship: self-esteem moderates the relationship between social comparison tendency and sense of security,and social comparison tendency has a greater influence on high school students with low self-esteem.Security partially mediates between social comparative tendencies and materialism,Based on the above survey results,the author puts forward corresponding education suggestions.
