The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane is another novel about China by the prominent Chinese-American writer Lisa See.Apart from continuing her usual historical narrative perspective and female narrative characteristic,it also interweaves Chinese minority culture and Chinese tea culture into the development of the storyline,which is refreshing to read.In this book,the deep connection between tea farmers and tea,the conflict between primitive minority culture and modern civilization,and the selfless love between mother and daughter have been deeply reflected,which not only stimulates readers’ interest in reading as well as arouses their resonance to a large extent,but also makes a positive contribution to the spread of Chinese culture.In this translation practice,part of the fifth part of The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane(a total of 13264 words)is selected for English-Chinese translation practice.In recent years,Chinese elements and traditional Chinese culture have been increasingly welcomed and valued worldwide,and the translation of such works attempts to provide some references for the further spread of Chinese culture.In order to better complete the translation practice,the theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen is chosen as the theoretical guidance of translation.The theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection emphasizes the subjective position of translators in translation and explores the adaptive selection and conversion of translators from three dimensions: language,culture and communication.The adaptive selection and conversion of translators runs through the entire translation process and is an important guarantee of translation quality.With regard to the literary attribute of the source text in this translation,in terms of translation strategies,domesticating translation is mainly adopted and literal translation is only chosen in the case of some contents that do not involve cultural and communicative dimensions according to the guidance of the theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection.In the selection of translation methods,taking into account the discrepancies in language forms and ways of thinking between Chinese and English as well as the reading habits of readers in the target context and other factors,the source text is carefully analyzed,and various means such as amplification,omission,inversion,and conversion are mainly employed and strive for a complete,accurate and authentic translation of Chinese stories from Chinese American literature in a way acceptable to Chinese readers.This report consists of five parts.The first part presents the description of the translation task,including the content of the translated text and the significance of the translation task.The second part clarifies the translation process,mainly including the preparation before translation,the handling of the problems in translation and the revision and final draft after translation.The third part introduces the guiding theory which provides the theoretical foundation for translation and report.The fourth part is about case studies,where the problems in the translation process are analyzed from the perspectives of linguistic dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension of the theory,and corresponding solutions are provided.The fifth part is the concluding part,which summarizes the translation report,the gains and losses in the translation and translation report writing process,through which,the translator has a deep understanding of the appropriate application of related translation theories,translation strategies and translation methods,which clears away some obstacles for the author’s future translation.It is expected that this translation practice and the writing of the report can further assist translators in obtaining some reference and enlightenment for the translation of related texts.
