Every era,every ruling group has its own mainstream ideology,so there are mainstream documentaries.The same is true of China’s mainstream documentary,which conveys the voice of the ruling party.The primary task of mainstream documentaries is to present major themes and mainstream consciousness,record major historical events at that time and convey the voice of the ruling party.The other task is to depict small people and reflect big themes,and to create mainstream cultural works that are easily accepted by the public through the depiction of small people and the details of daily life.Documentaries with moving images highlight the mainstream culture of China,support the mainstream ideology,and vigorously expound the wishes expressed by the mainstream ideology,thus inherits the red gene of the Chinese nation and builds up the confidence of Chinese culture.By systematically sorting out the four important historical periods of Chinese mainstream documentary in the past hundred years,and extracting the threads from them,this paper summarizes the development process,style characteristics and change reasons of each historical period,and expounds the new direction of the creation and development of Chinese mainstream documentary.Before the founding of New China,the publication of Dingjun Mountain marked the starting point of Chinese documentaries.In the era of "film theater",documentaries developed from ancient and traditional dramas,and people were curious about this kind of moving images.After the founding of the Communist Party of China,Chinese documentaries entered the era of "science and democracy".In this period,there appeared a variety of documentary narrative modes and artistic techniques,which greatly enriched the documentary form.The invasion of Japanese imperialism made Chinese documentaries enter the era of "war",and the smoke and war became the most concerned social events of that era.Since the founding of New China,China’s mainstream documentaries have entered a period of "tortuous development",focusing on the unfinished business of China’s democratic revolution and recording the construction of a new era of change.Documentaries during the period of "guiding and propaganda" assumed the general task of building socialism,and China’s political,military,diplomatic,economic and social construction made certain achievements.The establishment of professional documentary film studios and the expansion of ethnic documentaries marked important progress in China’s mainstream documentary industry.In the period of "distorted development",due to the influence of wrong tendency,the development of mainstream documentaries in China was greatly impacted.Political struggle documentaries reflecting false history emerged one after another,but real historical documentaries reflecting social construction also grew up like bamboo shoots.After the reform and opening up,China’s mainstream documentaries have gradually formed a variety of styles,and the expression of shooting techniques is more inclined to "small people,big themes".During the period of "awakening",the humanistic point of view explored richer life values.The main focus of mainstream documentaries was first to clear up the crimes of the "Gang of Four" and help the great men to be rehabilitated,second to emphasize the creation of "artistic livelihood",and third to channel specialization of TV documentaries.In the period of "diversity",Chinese mainstream documentary united front thought,under one guideline,explores diversified art forms and artistic works.During the "Movement" period,the mainstream documentaries in China tended to the marginal themes and the perspective of the people,which set off the challenge to the authority and the subversion of the rules.Since the new century,the mainstream documentaries in China have entered the "civilian" period.The creators project their eyes on the traditional Chinese culture,focus on the expression of the traditional Chinese national culture,and try their best to excavate the profound connotation of Chinese culture.During the period of "industry",the mainstream documentaries in China gradually formed the mode of large-scale industrial production,including the visualized political documentaries,the popular humanistic and historical documentaries and the trend of industrialization production and creation.In the period of "public",the creation of mainstream documentaries in China pays more and more attention to audience aesthetics,and focuses on audience participation from subject matter to expression techniques.In the new era,China’s mainstream documentary creation not only shoulders the task of serving political propaganda,but also needs to inherit the essence of traditional Chinese culture,innovate the narrative mode and expression techniques,and improve the audience’s artistic aesthetics silently.The development and dissemination of mainstream documentaries in China not only need to improve the aesthetics and quality of documentaries,but also need to consider cross-cultural and international communication,and pay attention to the expression of film value from the perspective of mankind.The innovation and development of Chinese mainstream documentary also needs to promote media integration,achieve qualitative leap in the new communication mode and expression form,and explore the way of survival and prosperity of Chinese mainstream documentary.
