| One of the general goals of English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)is to improve students’ learning ability,namely,students should set correct English learning goals,maintain interest in learning,actively participate in language practice,be willing to communicate in learning and learn to explore independently.As one of the cooperative learning methods,jigsaw method takes advantage of information gap to promote students to obtain and share information in reading activities.Students communicate,teach and cooperate with each other,which contributes to stimulating their learning initiative.Therefore,this thesis tries to apply jigsaw method into English reading teaching in junior high school,aiming to improve students’ English reading achievement and reading interest.This research is based on cooperative learning theory,social interdependence theory and zone of proximal development theory.Ninety-six students from a junior high school in Nanping town,Lintao county were research subjects.Test,questionnaire and students’ log were used to explore two questions.Firstly,what are effects of the application of jigsaw method on students’ English reading achievement in junior high school? Secondly,what are effects of the application of jigsaw method on students’ English reading interest in junior high school? The experiment lasted for two months.During the experiment,the experimental class was exposed to jigsaw method.Namely,teacher divides students into Home Group and Expert Group,meanwhile reading materials are divided into several subtasks according to the internal logic and distributed to students.These students who get the same subtasks form an expert group to study the same task.After that,they return to the home group and teach their own subtasks to other members.While in control class,the PWP model was applied.After the experiment,the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 27.0 software.The results show that the jigsaw method improves students’ English reading achievement.At the same time,jigsaw method has positive effects on students’ interest in English reading.There are two implications to English reading teaching in junior high schools.Firstly,in order to ensure the integrity of discourse,teachers should divide reading tasks according to the internal logic of reading materials.Secondly,teachers should make full use of information gap to motivate students’ learning initiative and improve their interest in English reading. |
