In the past 20^th century,material civilization developed rapidly at the expense of a large amount of energy consumption,which results in serious environmental damage.Nowadays,in order to realize people and nature harmonious intergrowth,people are exploring appropriate ways and drawing many splendid ideals to achieve sustainable development.New Vision 2050 portrays an ideal society called platinum society,it believes that the adjustments of industrial structure and lifestyle are keys to achieve sustainable development and gain material and spiritual affluence.This translation practice report selects the Chapter 6 of New Vision 2050 as a source material,which mainly talks about the measures Japan adopts in energy saving and emission reduction.In the translation process,the translator not only makes use of corpus tools,but also takes advantage of computer-aids tools such as Trados Studio,and Google,Bing,Terminology Online and other search engines to improve the accuracy of translation.At the same time,when it comes to the translation of social science text with strong logic and objectiveness,the translator adopts Catford’s translation shift theory flexibly to reduce the language gap between English and Chinese for that focuses on information rather than form.At the lexical level,the translator equips with level shift to conform to the target language form;and based on class shift for readability of the translated text.At the syntactic level,in order to deal with the syntactic differences between English and Chinese,the structure shift is used for fluency and unit shift is a good guideline to expressing original information smoothly and logically.This report finds that translators could make shifts from the perspectives of words and sentences to eliminate the differences between English and Chinese as much as possible in translating social science text,and then adjust internal structures to realize a higher quality translated text.This translation report contains five parts.The first part introduces translation background,significance and the report structure.The second part is about translation procedures.The third part is about the development of translation shift theory in China and abroad and the analysis of theory shift proposed by Catford.The fourth chapter makes a detailed analysis of some representative cases guided by Catford’s shift theory.The fifth part is a conclusion including gains,findings as well as limitations.
