A Report On The Translation Of Xi’an Government Work Report(2021) (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the successive prosperity of China’s international status and the deepening of global exchanges,the translation of government work report plays a drastically momentous part in promoting China’s economic,cultural and social development,shaping national and regional images and improving her international influence.Xi’an Government Work Report is the review of the work of Xi’an government in the past year and the prospect of the future,covering politics,economy,culture,social life and other aspects,which is the most authoritative source from Xi’an government,the best channel for the world to know Xi’an,and also the best opportunity for her publicity.Therefore,its English translation is of great significance to foreign exchanges.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory plays a bridging role in guiding the translation of political documents with Chinese characteristics,such as various government work reports.In view of this,the author analyzes the content and characteristics of Xi’an Government Work Report(2021),takes Functional Equivalence Theory as the theoretical support,and combines examples to explore the translation difficulties and corresponding translation methods from three aspects of lexicon,syntax and discourse.At the lexical level,the translation methods of loan,recreation and complement are used to complete the translation of new terms,words with Chinese characteristics and numerical abbreviations.At the syntactic level,the translation method of addition and shift are employed to break through the difficulties in the translation of non-subject sentences,coordinate sentences and the voice.At the textual level,the translation method of addition to supplement the reference and parentheses to achieve cohesion.By summarizing the translation of 2021 Xi’an Government Work Report,we hope that this report can provide reference for the translation of similar texts in the future and inspire other translators to apply relevant western translation theories to guide translation practice.
