Over30years of Reform and Opening up in China, China has achievedunprecedented development and advancement in Modernization drive and itsinternational standing, both politically and economically. China has gradually becomethe centre of the world with its overall national strength. At the same time, China iswilling to demonstrate its situations to the outside world so as to be better understoodby the world. The Chinese annual Government Work Report is issued, in officialdocument, to summarize and review the government work of the past one or fiveyears and arrange the government work of the next one or five years at people’scongress. It is related to many areas such as economy, politics and people’s wellbeingand so on. Being the most authoritative source, it is very important to translate theGWR into English so that it could be well understood in foreign countries.The thesis discuses the English translation of the Chinese GWR and its relatedissues based on Functional Equivalence Theory. Chapter one makes a generalintroduction to the Chinese GWR and its current studies and outlines the basicstructure of this thesis. Chapter two reviews the previous studies of the Chinese GWRfrom functional equivalence perspective and generalizes main problems in the presenttranslation of the GWR. Chapter three is the theoretical framework of the thesis,presenting Nida’s equivalence theory and putting forward two principles for the GWRtranslation. Chapter four is the main part of this thesis, which discusses the analysesof the Chinese GWR and its English translation at lexical, syntactic and discourselevel respectively. Then, it discusses the translation strategies and techniques bycomparing the differences between the Chinese version and the English translation.Chapter five is the conclusion. It summarizes the whole thesis, provides suggestionsto GWR translation and points out the practical value and limitations of this thesis.
