A Report On The Translation Of The Story Of Australia’s People:The Rise And Rise Of A New Australia(Chapters 19-20)

The source text of this translation project is selected from the distinguished Australian historian Geoffrey Blainey’s The Story of Australia’s People: The Rise and Rise of a New Australia,which consists of 25 chapters and completes Australia’s story from the early Gold Rush in 1851 to the present day.The translator chose Chapters19-20 of the book as the material for the translation project.Chapters 19-20 focus on the changes in Australia’s political parties and its exposed problems during World War II and its post-war efforts to rebuild the country.The translation will be of assistance to ordinary Chinese readers who want to know the history of Australia or Chinese scholars who engage in Australian studies or Sino-Australian relations.It will also promote the development of Asia-Pacific geopolitical studies.This translation project is guided by the Functional Equivalence Theory.The ST is an informative text,featuring heavy employment of proper nouns(such as geographical names,companies,and medicine names),culture-loaded words(such as idioms and some religious festivals or items),and long attributive clauses.All these pose challenges for the translator.To tackle these difficulties,the translator employs translation methods and techniques such as annotation,omission,semantic extension,substitution,paraphrase,sentence division,and restructuring to deliver the meaning to target readers under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.Due to the translator’s limited ability and knowledge in translation,the quality of translation still needs to be improved.However,the translator finds that the selection of translation theories must be based on the familiarity of the ST and the analysis of the features,key and difficult points,purposes and functions of ST,only in that way can the appropriate theory be selected to guide translation practice.
