A Report On E-C Translation Of From Jobs To Careers (Excerpts) In Light Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The source text of this translation is selected from a report titled From Jobs to Careers:Apparel Exports and Career Paths for Women in Developing Countries published by the World Bank in early 2022.The source text focuses on seven countries where the apparel industry plays an important role in the export basket,namely,Bangladesh,Cambodia,the Arab Republic of Egypt,Pakistan,Sri Lanka,Turkey,and Vietnam,to see how they are faring on the building blocks needed for women to move from jobs to careers.The first three chapters are translated and studied to complete this practice report.As an economic and trade text,the source text involves many concepts and terms related to formal employment,informal employment and women’s empowerment.Additionally,the text is characterized by strong professionalism and rigor.Therefore,the translator chooses the theory of functional equivalence to guide this translation practice.At the lexical level,lexical expansion is employed to resolve the difficulties in specific contexts.For example,when dealing with phrases with extended meanings and terminology in the professional field,the translator applies semantic restructuring,amplification and annotation to elucidate their underlying connotations.At the syntactic level,techniques such splitting and restructuring have been employed to address the translation challenges posed by complex and lengthy sentences.For instance,the translator has broken the surface structure of lengthy sentences and reorganized them into appropriate Chinese,achieving the goal of natural expression and functional equivalence.At the textual level of translation,addition of connectives and restoration of pronouns are used to achieve coherence at the textual level.In conclusion,the translator has employed translation strategies such as lexical expansion to overcome the difficulties in translating vocabulary and phrases.The approach of splitting and restructuring has also assisted the translator in transferring surface structures to deep structures.Addition of connectives and restoration of pronouns have clarified logical connections between sentences.Additionally,the translation practice provides valuable insights and guidance for the translation of economic and trade texts.
