A Report On The Translation Of Indians:A Brief History Of A Civilization(Chapter 1)

The report is based on the translation of the first chapter of Indians: A Brief History of a Civilization,a book authored by Indian writer Namit Arora.The source text focuses on the rise and fall of the Indus Valley Civilization,using the city of Dholavira as an example.The primary goal of this translation project is to promote the Indian Studies in China,thus to provide better responses to geopolitical issues and facilitate the development of domestic research on Area Studies.The target readers for the book includes Chinese scholars working in Indian studies and Sino-Indian relations research,as well as general Chinese public with an interest in Indian history and culture.To this end,Peter Newmark’s Text Typology Theory,has been utilized to classify the source text as informative.Meanwhile Newmark’s Communicative Translation has been deemed the most suitable guiding theory this type of text.Therefore,the translator has provided solutions to address obstacles encountered during the translation process,including culture-loaded words and complex sentences with multiple modifiers,through translation methods such as transliteration,annotation,conversion and restructuring.The aim is to produce a target text that is more fluent and readable for the target readers.
