A Report On C-E Translation Of Heroes In Harm’s Way(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Communication Studies

The novel coronavirus pandemic has swept the world and severely affected the daily lives of people in all countries.China has actively carried out relevant epidemic prevention work to protect people’s lives and property.At the same time,China is facing severe pressure.Some Western media have questioned or even slandered China’s efforts in fighting the epidemic.Therefore,international publicity translation is particularly important in shaping the national image and promoting the soft power of the country.The book Heroes in Harm’s Way published by the People’s Publishing House in 2020 records the heroic deeds of medical workers across the country who rushed to help Hubei province to fight the epidemic through a series of news stories.The author selects Chapter Two Stories of Medical Group and the Chapter Three Stories of Individual Fighting Against the Epidemic for translation practice.By analyzing the characteristics of language texts in news reports,guided by communication theory,and giving full play to the subjectivity of translators,the author studies translation strategies from some aspects that affect the translation effect,pointing out that translators need to fully consider the factors such as "who translate","what to translate","through what media","to whom",and try to achieve the expected communication effects through rewriting,weakening,free translation and other translation methods.The following findings are drawn from this report:(1)Through this translation practice,the author believes that the theory of communication has a positive guiding significance for international publicity translation.From the perspective of communication theory,active play should give to the subjectivity of translators in publicity translation,taking into consideration the national interest and national position,and cultural characteristics of the target language as well.The translator should carry out translation flexibly without violating the principle of information transmission in the original language,so that to tell Chinese stories well,and improve international communication capacity.(2)When consulting relevant parallel texts to assist in translation,attention should be paid to the choice of media.Due to the uniqueness of international publicity translation,it is necessary to choose words carefully and convey information accurately and faithfully.Therefore,we can read relevant articles published by official media so as to learn about relevant vocabulary expressions and improve translation accuracy.(3)In the process of translation,the reading habits of the target groups should be taken into consideration as far as possible to make the translation more authentic and easier for readers to understand.(4)This text involves a large number of anti-epidemic news published on the official website or public account.The language styles of different media are various from each other,and there are many expressions of medical teams,diseases.In order to convey it to readers accurately and smoothly,translators are not only required to have good bilingual ability,but also to actively search for relevant information and master correspondent knowledge.This translation report still has some limitations:(1)In terms of translation practice,the author’s current professional knowledge is still limited,so the translation can only be as faithful and smooth as possible,but cannot meet the translation standard of "elegance".(2)The content of this book is very detailed.Due to the limited time and space,the author can only select some parts for translation,so it is still difficult for readers to empathize with the greatness of medical staff.This translation practice report made the author realize own problems and shortcomings,and with improvement in bilingual ability and translation level.At the same time,the author has a better understanding of China’s fight against COVID-19 and enhanced the national pride.The author also hopes much more participation in the application research of communication theory in the field of international publicity translation,and make own contribution to it.
