A Study Of Counpterpoint Therory In Zarlino’s "The Art Of Counterpoint"

Josef Zarino(Gioseffo Zarlino1517--1590)is an Italian music theorist and composer,and an authoritative figure in the development of western music.The famous music theorist Lamo called him "the Maharaja of music theorists".Zarino wrote many music theories throughout his life.For example,Harmony Code,Harmony Demonstration,Music Addendum,etc.,among which his first book,Harmony Code,is the most famous.The Code of Harmony is divided into four volumes,among which the third volume,The Art of Place,has the most profound influence.For the alignment of the sixteen century,The Art of Place is a landmark work.This paper takes the art of counterpoint as the research object,and on the basis of the translation study,we further study the polyphonic theory in the book.This paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces Zarino’s life experience and musical achievements,and combines Zarino’s biography to discuss his outstanding achievements in the field of music from music theory and music creation;the second chapter is the main content of counterpoint art,including the interval classification,interval use,multi-voice counterpoint rules and the use of Greek tone,including the vertical combination of proportion,fugue and imitation,and the combination of counterpoint and canon.This paper aims to study the development process of polyphonic theory in the Renaissance.As a leading figure in polyphonic theory in this period,Zarino can study the polyphonic theory in his book The Art of Counteresis,which can have a clearer understanding of the development of polyphonic theory in this period.It is hoped that other scholars can provide some reference value when studying the polyphonic theory of the same period.Finally,the rough translation of the art of counteresis is attached to the end of an appendix for the reader’s reference.
