This report is based on the translation practice of The colonial period of American history, which is a history book that tells in detail the social, political, and religious changes and developments in the colonial period of American history. For an informative text, clear and understandable presentation of facts, information, knowledge, opinions are the main concern for both the author and the readers. If translating such a text into another language, the translator has to ensure the target readers receive clear information conveyed by the author as much as possible that they may have a full picture of what the author describes. Therefore, translation is not just a literal transmission of the original text, but one adapted to the needs of the target readers.Explicitation of the implicit information in translation is the main issue for this report to explore.Based on the principles of explicitation, this report analyzes the implicit information existing in the original text and explores the application of explicitation strategy in the translation of historical texts.Such features of the source text as the frequent use of pronouns, polysemy, proper nouns and complex sentences may become barriers for the target readers if not translated properly. Therefore,at the word level, the translator adopts such methods as the embodiment of pronouns, word derivation, annotation of proper nouns, and the use of four-character words to achieve the explicitation of word meaning. At the sentence level, the translator mainly adopts the following strategies to make the sentence logical relationship become more explicit by the omission of the punctuation, the transformation of connectives, and sentence adjustment. On these two levels, explicitation strategy works well to bring out the implicit linguistic information in the original text, enabling the target readers to have a more comprehensive and correct understanding of the original text. The report proves that the explicitation strategy can greatly improve the accuracy of the translation and improve the readability of the translation. It is hoped that this practice report can provide references and suggestions for future translators who participate in historical texts translation.
