| Flame retardants are widely used in various fields of human society as they can protect people’s lives, reduce property losses, and promote economic development. With the rapid development of green chemistry and technology, the novel green flame retardants with low smoke and low toxicity has become a research focus in this field. Therefore,it has practical significance to translate such related materials. This translation report is written based on the English-Chinese translation practice of Modeling the Endothermic Decomposition of Hydrated Solid,a sci-tech paper completed by professor J.E.J.Staggs of University of Leeds,UK.The report analyzes and discusses the application of the three principles of Skopos Theory in translation practice from the aspects of vocabulary, syntax and text, and summarizes translation strategies and methods. At the lexical level, the analysis is carried out from the perspectives of terminologies, common words, symbols and formulas, and the translation methods such as annotation, formula interpretation, transliteration and free translation,as well as a combination of literal translation and free translation, are adopted to ensure that the translation faithfully and accurately conveys the semantic meaning of the source text.At the syntactic level, the author focuses on the translation of compound sentences and complex sentences, and selects the methods of linear translation, backward translation, division, and conversion to ensure semantic fidelity and smooth expression. At the textual level, the report discusses the use of repetition, substitution, omission and other methods to achieve the coherence and cohesion of the text,so as to ensure that the translation remains faithful to the source text, expresses concisely, naturally, and smoothly. The translation practice not only improves the author’s translation skills, deepens the understanding and application of Skopos theory, but also provides a certain reference for the translation of such relevant flame retardant literature. In addition,it makes the author realize her own insufficiency in translation practice and needs further improvement. |
