Abstract/Summary:
In today’s society, science and technology are developing rapidly, and exchanges of science and technology between countries are growing as well. Thus, translating scientific and technological texts has become an important means of communication within the field. The source text of this translation practice report is selected from the article Ageing Studies on AP/HTPB Based Composites Solid Propellants published in Energetic Materials Frontiers. This text is a typical scientific and technical text.Different types of ageing: physical, chemical ageing,hygro-chemical ageing and the deterioration associated with cumulative damage have been discussed in detail.Sources and mechanisms of ageing have been explored and their associated effects on the propellant properties(physical and mechanical)are also described.Further, the gap in propellant ageing research have been identified and suggestions are provided for the future research. In this report, the translator gives a detailed description of the translation process, focusing on the characteristics of the source text and its corresponding solution strategies in the translation process through two levels: lexical and syntactic. At the level of lexical translation, the translator focuses on the unification of technical terms, multiple meanings of words, abbreviations, and the application of various translation techniques including chemical formulas in the text.At the level of syntactic translation, the translator analyzes various translation techniques for sentences in the text, which include amplification, linear translation, inverse translation, literal translation and transformation.Because translation at the syntactic level is a major feature of this practice report, the examples and analysis of translation techniques at the syntactic level are the core part of the description of the translation process. At the same time, the report ends with a summary of the experiences that are beneficial to the improvement of the translation level of scientific and technical texts and the problems encountered in the process of this translation practice and suggestions for improvement. In conclusion, when translating scientific and technical texts, translators should master the relevant background knowledge and use various translation strategies to continuously accumulate experience in translating scientific and technical texts in order to achieve the best translation effect and contribute to international scientific and technical exchanges.
